Best Ball Quarterback Breakdown

Best Ball Quarterback Breakdown

Hi there!

Steven Mullen here taking a best ball specific look at the QB position. A few notes to start with. If you see (3) next to a QB's name it means it is a QB that makes me lean towards owning 3 QBs and 2 TEs on my roster. We know that 6 RBs and 7 WRs is the optimal roster construction based on win %. This note is to help you decide when to take 3 QBs. Under each QB I will list what I believe are their top 3 stack options the players you will most benefit from owning with your QB. I will not draft more then 1 QB that has the same bye week.

TIER 1

1. Patrick Mahomes KC

Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins

2. Deshaun Watson(3) HOU

Deandre Hopkins, Will Fuller, Keke Coutee

3. Aaron Rodgers GB

Devante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Geronimo Allison

Tier Notes: You may ask why Andrew Luck is last in tier 1 (Updated isn't!). The reason why I have him 4th in Best Ball is because of his lack of stud(top 2 QB) weeks. Last year in his career year Luck produced 0 stud weeks. Stud weeks really move the needle in Best Ball you are looking for max points week to week over consistency. Your depth provides you consistency. Mahomes(25%) and Watson(33%) have small sample sizes but incredible stud %s. Rodgers last health season he had 6 stud weeks in 2017. I think we are all assuming last year was down for him do to injury. I believe with a solid defense and run game and a team that will be playing firmly ahead a lot this season that Luck will not see a big increase in stud weeks. Despite this I think Luck for sure deserves a spot in tier 1 and I would not consider moving him out of it.

TIER 2

4. Matt Ryan ATL

Julio Jones, Calvin Ridley, Austin Hooper

5. Baker Mayfield CLE

Odell Beckham, Jarvis Landry, David Njoku

6. Carson Wentz(3) PHI

Zack Ertz, Alshon Jeffery, Desean Jackson

7. Kyler Murray(3) ARI

Christian Kirk, Larry Fitzgerald, Andy Isabella

8. Cam Newton(3) CAR

DJ Moore, Curtis Samuel, Greg Olsen

9. Jameis Winston TB

Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, OJ Howard

10. Russel Wilson SEA

Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, Will Dissly

11. Andrew Luck Ind

Ty Hilton, Eric Ebron, Devin Funchess

12. Jared Goff LAR

Brandin Cooks, Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp

13. Lamar Jackson(3) BAL

Mark Andrews, Marquise Brown, Miles Boykin

14. Josh Allen(3) BUF

John Brown, Zay Jones, Robert Foster

15. Dak Prescott DAL

Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, Randall Cobb

16. Drew Brees NO

Michael Thomas,  Jared Cook, Trequan Smith

17. Ben Roethlisberger PIT

JuJu Smith-Schuster, Vance McDonald, Dante Moncrief

18. Mitch Trubisky CHI

Allen Robinson, Anthony Miller, Trey Burton

Tier Notes: This tier may seem large to you. I believe in larger tiers for Best Ball because we are focusing 1st on ADP and value based drafting so you shouldn't be reaching for players often. The 2nd reason tiers are larger is because of how much better stacking is in Best Ball then seasonal leagues. Often it is best to wait a round to get a QB you already have a top stack target for within tier. I don't recommend waiting if it will cause you to go into the next tier.

TIER 3

19. Jimmy Garrapalo(3) SF

George Kittle, Dante Pettis, Deebo Samuel

20. Philip Rivers SD

Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Hunter Henry

21. Kirk Cousins MIN

Adam Theilen, Stefon Diggs, Kyle Rudolph

22. Tom Brady NE

Julian Edelman, Josh Gordon, Nkeal Harry

23. Derek Carr OAK

Antonio Brown, Tyrell Williams, Darren Waller

24. Matt Stafford DET

Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones, TJ Hockenson

Tier Notes: Brady only has 2 targets listed as I would currently not roster any of his other targets. Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen I have ranked lower then most seasonal rankers do. The reason for this is in seasonal you only have to consider a late round QBs ceiling. If they suck or get hurt you just find another QB. In Best Ball you are stuck with these guys no matter what. The fact that we must consider these players very low floors in Best Ball drops them into tier 3.

TIER 4

25. Sam Darnold NYJ

Robby Anderson, Chris Hendon, Jamison Crowder

26. Andy Dalton CIN

AJ Green, Tyler Boyd, Tyler Eifert

27. Marcus Mariota(3) TEN

Corey Davis, Delanie Walker, AJ Brown

28. Nick Foles JAX

Dede Westbrook, Marquise Lee, DJ Chark

Tier Notes: All QBs from Washington, Denver, NY Giants and Miami are absent from the list. I would not currently draft any QBs from these teams. If Haskins(WAS), Rosen(MIA), or Daniel Jones(NYG) won the starting job in preseason I would then start to get shares of those QBs. I think all those young QBs will get chances this season. QB is not a position I am willing to take 0 scores at in the hopes of mid or late season success.

Good Luck in your drafts!

Steve
